We recently checked out the Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese from Sonic. With a name like that we became excited, and had high expectations going into our taste test.
For us at Food Rankers, could this be comfort food heaven? It certainly seems to check off several comfort food boxes. We want to share our experience, and tell you if the Sonic Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese was a success with our crew.
Sonic Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese Review
The Sonic Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese is made up of a mixture of grilled steak and grilled onion. The meat filling topped with crispy bacon, honey bbq sauce. and mayo. The meal is completed by being served between two slices of Texas toast, with grilled cheese.
We ordered our sandwich with the bacon extra crispy. The crispy bacon added an extra texture, and flavor to the sandwich. Some of our tasters were surprised to find decent quality steak, especially from a fast food restaurant.
Most of our panel thought that the steak was a little bland, and that cheese and bbq sauce elements didn’t add much to the sandwich. Most of our crew barely tasted either ingredient. We also felt that there was too much mayo on the sandwich, for our personal tastes. This contributed to us feeling that there was a lot going on, causing some ingredients to get a bit lost. The amount of mayo could also explain why the steak did not seem to have much flavor.
Most of us opted for the regular Sonic Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese, but there is also a spicy variety. This includes a zesty cheese sauce and substitutes the bbq sauce for jalapeños. The one panelist that tried the spicy version said it has a decent kick to it, but it seems to have the same issues with too much mayo and sauce.
Summary and Rating
The Sonic Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese didn’t fully live up to our expectations. There were some parts that we enjoyed and others that we did not. In general, we found it to be a little better than average fast food. Regrettably, this sandwich did not live up to our expectations.
