Lava Sauce is finally back at Taco Bell, and both the Taco Bell Volcano Taco and Volcano Burrito are back on the menu for a limited time! Fans of the menu items featuring this deliciously spicy, creamy sauce are understandably stoked that they can order a Volcano Taco or burrito again.
We tried both of the Volcano Menu items to see if they are as good as we remember, and we are sharing our opinions on the Taco Bell Volcano Taco in this spicy food review!
Taco Bell Volcano Taco Review
For those that have never tried this spicy taco or need a reminder, the Taco Bell Volcano Taco is similar to the chain’s standard crunchy taco with their signature seasoned beef, lettuce, and cheddar cheese in a crunchy shell. However, there are two key differences – the red shell and the addition of Lava Sauce. Lava Sauce is basically an extra spicy nacho cheese sauce that promises to add a nice punch of fiery flavor to any menu item.

In case you are wondering, the lava sauce was mostly hidden underneath or on top of the meat in our tacos. The real question though is whether the sauce tastes like we remember or expected. It is clearly present in the mix with its kick of spice and hints of nacho cheese flavor. However, most of our crew members who have eaten plenty of Lava Sauce in the past say that this version seems to have a little less fiery kick than the Lava Sauce yesteryear.
That said, it adds great flavor to the taco. The only thing that can make a classic taco better is a tasty sauce added in, and Lava Sauce does well on that point with its spicy and somewhat cheesy notes. We still like it even though it isn’t as spicy as we remember.
The good news is that you can get Lava Sauce for a limited time on either the Taco Bell Volcano Taco, Volcano Burrito, or added to any menu item for a small additional charge. Volcano Crunchwrap, anyone?
The only other thing worth mentioning is that the sauce makes the taco go soggy quicker, making for a messy eating experience. We recommend eating Taco Bell Volcano Tacos as soon as you get them, if possible!
Summary And Rating
The Volcano Taco is an interesting spicy take on the standard crunchy taco. We are happy to be able to order Lava Sauce again for this limited run. Some dedicated Lava Sauce enthusiasts feel that the sauce used to pack a spicier punch than it does now, but it’s still a great sauce.
